The Benefits of Shotblasting for Industrial Surfaces

Shotblasting does two things no other preparation method does as well: it removes contamination completely, and it leaves a measurable, repeatable surface profile.

Wire brushing and grinding polish rather than clean — they skim the high points and leave rust in the pitting, and they can burnish steel to a smooth finish that coatings struggle to grip. Jet washing removes loose material and dirt but not mill scale, tightly adhered rust or laitance. Chemical stripping introduces residues that must be neutralised and washed off, plus disposal issues.

Blasting removes coatings, corrosion, laitance and contamination in a single pass and simultaneously creates the anchor profile the coating datasheet asks for, which is why practically every protective coating specification is written around a blast grade.

It is also faster over area, produces a consistent result independent of operator judgement, and with closed-circuit recovery it generates far less mess than the alternatives.

The practical benefit is coating life. Correctly blasted and primed steel routinely runs 15–25 years before maintenance; badly prepared steel fails in a fraction of that.
