Steel Shotblasting Ireland

Mill-scale and rust removal to Sa 2½ standards for fabricators, steelwork and structural steel projects.

Structural and fabricated steel must be blasted before it is painted, or the coating will fail early. Rayco removes mill scale, rust and old paint from beams, plate, sections, tanks and fabricated assemblies to Sa 2½ (ISO 8501-1), producing a clean angular anchor profile — typically 50–75 microns — that primers key into properly. We work in fabrication shops, on construction sites and at industrial plant nationwide.

This service forms part of our nationwide Shotblasting Ireland work — see that page for the full process, standards and county coverage.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Sa 2½ blast cleaning?

Sa 2½ is the 'very thorough blast cleaning' grade in ISO 8501-1 — the surface is free of visible oil, grease, mill scale and rust, with only slight shadowing permitted. It is the standard most protective coating systems specify.

How soon must steel be painted after blasting?

Ideally within four hours and always before flash rusting begins. We coordinate directly with your painting contractor so the primer goes on inside the window.

Can you blast galvanised or stainless steel?

Yes — using non-ferrous media such as garnet or glass bead so the surface is keyed without contaminating it with embedded iron.
